I have written many times about why fast food should be taxed higher than cigarettes or tobacco. I have stated that McDonalds and other fast food restaurants are killing more Americans than Phillip Morris and Budweiser combined. Looks like McD’s is coming to realize that the days of 2,000 calorie cheeseburgers are numbered. I gotta say – Kudo’s to Ronald and the gang.

The Advocate: “McDonald’s restaurants in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut plan to launch menus for people following low-fat, low-calorie, or low-carbohydrate diets.

Nutritionist and author Pamela Smith is working with the fast-food chain to create the Real Life Choices program, which will start in January, McDonald’s Corp. said Wednesday.

The move is the latest in a string of initiatives from the Oak Brook, Ill., company aimed at reviving sales growth by offering meals that appeal more to an increasingly health-conscious public.

On Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported that McDonald’s plans to introduce a leaner white-meat version of its Chicken McNugget this fall.

The chain is also testing a ‘Go Active’ meal in Indiana. It includes a salad, an exercise booklet and a pedometer to encourage people to walk more.”

Of course a lot of this is spin, but I think McDonalds realizes that they are a few Big Macs shy of a really big lawsuit or tax burden. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Side thought: Maybe they will have a Huggy Christ Happy Meal! That would be cool.
