Kent Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola, was found guilty of 58 counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faces a maximum of 288 years in prison.

Jo Hovind was charged and convicted in 44 of the counts involving evading bank-reporting requirements. She faces up to 225 years in prison but was allowed to remain free pending the couple’s sentencing on Jan. 9.

Heldmyer said Kent Hovind was a flight risk and a “danger to the community.”

His attorney, Alan Richey, argued that the Internal Revenue Service pursued his client because of his religious beliefs.

Kent Hovind, whose life’s mission is to debunk evolution, says he and his employees are workers of God and therefore exempt from paying taxes. He pays his employees in cash and does not withhold their taxes or pay his share as an employer.

  1. The good thing about believing in an afterlife is that it makes 288 years seem like a breeze. But she will be out 63 years before he will, I wonder if she will stay faithful. I’ll be interested to see the actual sentences.

  2. When you all step into hell you’ll wish that you listened to these preachers.

  3. When I get to hell Ill tell your mom you said Hi.

  4. Matter of perspective. Maybe someone could help me out with this.
…failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faces a maximum of 288 years in prison…
Okay, so works out to be 1 year per $2934.03 not paid to Uncle Sam.
This does not factor in the penalty the jury also granted for the prosecution’s request for the Hovinds to forfeit $430,400.
In 2005 in Florida, the average jail time server for murder/manslaughter is 9.4 years.
In 2005 in Florida, the average jail time server for sexual battery 5.7.

So the sentence for committing murder/manslaughter could be the equivalent of not paying the Federal Government $27579.88, and for sexual assault, $16723.91.
Now put aside your religious biases, be they evolutionism or creationism, and ask yourself, “Does this seem right?”

Now I realize that many hate Hovind and his beliefs. This is commonplace for any person who takes any strong stance for or against any particular faith, since most religions are vehemently intolerant of other religions, evolutionism included, but try to put that aside for a second. Hovind’s crime could earn him the equivalent sentencing of someone who murdered and/or raped everyone who posted on this forum, granted half of you think that wouldn’t be a bad thing to happen to the other half.

  5. Well put. There thousands involved in tax fraud, How many look at life in prision? Muy intersante…..

  7. For all you scripture quoters:

“Render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s”

You mess with the bull (I.R.S.), you get the horns. “Dr.” Hovind was defiant to the end. His legacy will be nothing more than a joke and his teachings will leave a black mark on Christians everywhere.

  8. Hey Anonymous (encouragement for Kent Hovind)- God just spoke to me and you are going to hell. Have a nice day.

Meanwhile, does any normal person (no, not you anonymous!) know the status of Dr Turd-Brain? He was supposed to be sentenced Jan 9, and I am waiting to hear the good news about how long his honeymoon with his cell-mate will last.

We can only hope that Kent-boy had an opportunity to “pray” with Ted Haggard before he got locked away, so he will know how to properly behave when he is “entertaining” the boys of cell-block 9.

  9. for all your ignorant sheep who don’t already know this…..icome tax is anti-constitutional. for all you pricks who find this funny that dr kent hovind is being jailed…i would like you to find any written law that says you have to pay any income tax….your search will take you until you die, because there is no law saying anything about paying any income tax! you people make me sick…this man represents YOU and american person. americans are the most despicable creatures on earth….they hate they’re own citizens so much that they are happy when one of their own is thrown in jail for a law that does not even EXIST! and it can’t EXIST because it is totally and one hundred percent ANTI-Constitutional!!!!!

    wake up you sheep!

  10. It appears that Father Dan is already in hell. :(

  11. Why are you calling everyone “sheep,” Mr./Mrs./Ms. Anonymous?

Also, I have a hard time listening to a tirade on the Constitution and U.S. law from a person who can hardly spell and seems to have no consciousness of the “Shift” key or the basics of English grammar.

  12. Ok some body answer this your all saying he’s an idiot because he believes Dragons now known as dinosaurs lived on earth with people right? So In all honesty Dragons have been talked about since the beginning of time but all of a sudden once they switch the word to dinosaurs now they’re millions of years old. How would people in the B.C. era be painting and drawing and sculpting Dragons (dinosaurs) if they never seen them, they didnt have the technology to dig up there bones and put them together like we do now would they so hmmmm lets think real hard on this where would they ever get an idea of such a creature? If you can answer that write back, but im sure you wont be because the only answer you could give is humans and Dragons (Dinosaurs) lived together. You got an answer my email is dma51386@yahoo.com love to here from you schoffers A.K.A. HATERS

  14. For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith in God without effect? (Rom. 3:3)

  15. ha ha, well OBVIOUSLY he was just in it for the money. i guess the high school science teaching job did not pay well enough to retire. now WE get to pay for his retirement. what a funny story.

  16. If you will permit me, I can show you that you are probably, and maybe more religious than Kent Hovind.

    But..only with your express permission.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hello All,

I am deeply saddened that Kent Hovind is in jail. Yes, he should have paid those taxes – you cannot win against the mammoth IRS or any other government agencies once they have their sights on you.

But Kent is not a bad man. He gave me an opportunity to co-author a book with him – ‘Claws, Jaws and Dinosaurs’. if you want to help with his defense fund, then buy a copy from his ministry, Creation Science Evangelism. Indeed, Kent has stood up to the tyranny of Darwinism and atheism while many of us allowed ourselves to be overcome with the “fear of men.”

Yes, he is a fallen creature and a (forgiven) sinner like some of us, but do not condemn him so heavily while peodphiles, rapists and murderers – those who have willingly destroyed lives – get far less jail time than him.

  20. I’m so interested in how so many people put aside common decency when writing internet blogs and comments. It’s amusing how uncivil people can be when they’re not speaking face to face. Just a thought for you all.

  21. Dr. Kent Hovind: From the Pensacola Jail!

    Don Boys, Ph.D.

In my recent column dealing with my friend Dr. Kent Hovind who is probably the most effective creation/evolution apologist in America, I compared his problems with some early Americans who opposed British-imposed taxes on the thirteen colonies. While there is no question that both Hovind and Hancock actions were similar in that they were tax-related, they were not the same.

From the Pensacola jail, Dr. Hovind told me on Dec. 10 that he is “not a tax protester”; he simply insists on the Federal Government enforcing the laws as they are written. Some will say that he is trying to pin a nicer label on himself; however, I don’t think so. He told me “The tax laws very clearly give some ‘exceptions’; and some ‘exemptions’ for certain individuals and certain ministries, including 508 (c) (1) (a) church ministries.” He told me “I have corresponded with the IRS on numerous occasions asking them exactly what laws apply to 508 (c) (1) (a). However, they never responded to any of my letters. The agents themselves testified that they did not ever respond to any of my letters.”

That is astounding and outrageous! Repeatedly he sought clarification and received no help! Do the IRS officials think they have no obligation to correspond with lowly peons who pay their salaries? Is this arrogance, defiance, or obstinacy? Or all three? This IRS arrogance is not known by Kent’s critics. Some of his critics are so filled with loathing and hatered that it will make no difference.

So the Hovind case involves a taxpayer who disagrees with Federal authorities (not a Federal crime) and requests clarification of those laws. Moreover, it should be added that many attorneys agree with Hovind. So, why didn’t the government answer his questions and why didn’t the trial judge speak to the exceptions in the code?

Furthermore, Kent told me that he never boasted about beating the tax system. Then either David Gibbs was wrong because that is what the papers reported or maybe the news accounts were wrong. Even if he did boast about beating the system, that isn’t a crime in itself. It is not a Federal offence to boast, belittle, or even beat tax laws (as long as beating the laws is done legally by use of legitimate tax shelters, trusts, etc.) I have heard him say two or three times that he pays all taxes that he owes. He does not recommend tax protesting. Neither do I. One can legally avoid taxes but not evade them.

Kent told me that he “believes that everyone should obey the tax laws—including the government.” Do Gibbs, Horton, and Kent’s other critics see anything wrong with that statement? Why not hold the feet of Government officials to the fire? Haven’t they been aloof, arbitrary, and arrogant long enough? Why not chain them down with the laws they are supposed to obey? Or is it now a one-way street where only citizens are held accountable?

It is interesting that in Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Heldmyer’s closing argument, she said, “Nobody likes to pay taxes, but we do because it’s the law, and he is not above the law.” I want to remind that attorney that Federal officials are also required to obey the laws! Too often, government officials, in a desire to put another notch on their gun will deliberately skew the facts, lie, manufacture “evidence,” misquote an innocent victim, etc., since after all, “he is obviously guilty.” While we don’t have any evidence that happened with Kent’s trial, it has happened many times.

Most Americans have an innate sense of fairness, and don’t like seeing an ordinary citizen mistreated especially when some rapists and killers walk away with probation! Surely if violent felons can walk free with probation then it is only reasonable that Kent receive the same consideration. Just last week, a black entertainer was charged with tax fraud–12 million dollars, yet he is still free on bail! Kent is in jail. It is also interesting to note that the entertainer still has his passport and is free to travel. It is such imbalance and unfairness that make so many American citizens critical of the judicial system.

I do not question the Hovinds’ motives. I do not believe he has ever been motivated by greed. After all, for many years he has permitted people to duplicate his videos and pass them on to other people! Obviously, avarice is not part of his nature.
He did not try to hide what he was doing about taxes. I understand, in tax matters, intent is very important and while no person on earth can always ascertain another person’s heart, I am as certain as possible that Kent is genuine.

Assuming he is correct about the IRS code, I think he was unwise to risk his and his wife’s freedom as well as his ministry. However, there is a possibility he will be considered a hero in a few years for standing for proper enforcement of laws. Some of the very people who are critical of Dr. Hovind consider Henry David Thoreau a very principled man.

Thoreau in 1846 was arrested in Massachusetts and spent some time in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax. His friend Ralph Waldo Emerson visited him, and peered through the bars, and asked, “Henry, what are you doing in there?” Thoreau replied: “Waldo, what are you doing out there?” I wonder if Kent feels that way? Maybe in a few years some of us on the outside today may realize that we should have been on the inside with Kent!

  22. I get it now, all those lies and decietfull twists of logic were all probably just for the money. I was worried that he actually just wanted people to believe something he knows is pure deciet just for kicks.

Still, jail is wrong, but i’m glad he’s been stoped.

  23. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNZCcTcOPV0 In case anyone hasn’t heard.

  24. I have been a believer/follower in creation science for over 20 years. It is the only true answer to origins. Once you know the truth you are amazed at the ‘blindness’ of most people who don’t understand. Kent is one of many who teach creation science. He was good and that made him a target. His challenge with the IRS and local building permits was not something he should have done even if he didn’t agree with it. It has only served to damage his ministry and take him out of it.

  25. Kent Hovent is one of the few God fearing individuals who debunks evolutionist theories with simple fact and common sense..
No wonder they (the evo's) run with their tail between their legs when they're invited for a public debate.

If you really believe you evolved from a rock or a monkey-like common ancestor, then you probably did.
So what does that make you then?
    A semi-intelligent ape?
Based on some of the posts here I'd agree.

Stick it out Kent, you're not the first outspoken creationist to go to jail and you won't be the last.
More people are praying for you than you know. :-)

    God bless.
