Actually it was during the “Super” bowl – but stay wth me, this is important. While parents the world over received a wake-up call as to what their children consider normal entertainment [I.e. stripping and gyrating] most were strangely silent on jack-ass Kid Rock’s decision to cut a hole in an American flag and wear it like a poncho.
Now that the nipple incident has died down I want to thank MTV, CBS, Viacom, and the NFL for showing the world – the world – how much we respect our servicemen and women and what we think of patriotism. Fly the flag proudly or burn the flag in protest – these are your rights, but to desecrate it for the sake of shock value is abhorent.
Post 9-11 every weekend patriot ran out and slapped a flag on their SUV. Yet just a few years later the cries of outrage are directed toward a 4-second, partially obscured and almost certainly silicon enhanced boob shot. Meanwhile, as millions of star-spangled home shopping network tchotchkes rot in closets, the image of the American flag as a poncho is broadcast to the world with hardly a peep. Sure, the VFW was upset but they’re a bunch of grumpy old farts anyway.
So what did America have to say? TSG is presenting a sampling of letters sent to the Federal Communications Commission following the controversial halftime show. “Along with calls for heavy fines and license revocations, many correspondents actually suggested that the two singers be imprisoned. We were also surprised how many letter writers claimed to have been watching the game with their church group, all of whom were aghast when Jackson’s right nipple made its brief, shadowy debut. But while so many complainants claimed to have been shocked at the site of Jackson’s breast, not a single e-mail provided to TSG (pursuant to a Freedom of Information request) was sent the night of the game. It wasn’t until the American Family Association and other conservative groups began screaming that the FCC’s mailbox began to swell.”
You can
read the letters here. Very, very entertaining.
Hopefully you’ll remember the MTV, CBS, Viacom, NFL debacle and speak up with your channel changers and pocketbooks. Then again, being that you’re American – you probably won’t. [What Do YOU Think? Comment on this Post!] [Testify!]
