A man’s body was found by divers in the Pend Oreille River near Newport, Wash., on September 25; sheriff’s deputies estimate that he was carrying about 40 lbs. of beer (a satchel full around his body, plus cans in his pocket) but said they would wait for an autopsy before commenting.

Cooperative Criminals
Two men walked out of the Eternal Life Church in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday night, having robbed the pastor of $300, kind of, but police think they’ll be able to find them. Rev. Tony Caldwell had convinced the men that, since he didn’t have any cash on hand, would they take checks for $150 each, and would they please spell their names so he can write them out. And they did.

Time For A New Hobby
During an attempt to set a world record for deep diving, Australian David Shaw had reached a depth of 271 meters in the Boesmansgat sinkhole in South Africa, when he found he was not the first one there. He found the skeletal remains of Deon Dreyer, who had never come up from a similar record-setting attempt in 1994. Shaw said he could have gone deeper, but gave up his quest after he found Dreyer’s body.
