The Age: This week Philips, the huge Dutch electronics company that invented the cassette and technology that led to the CD and DVD, announced the closure of its remaining VCR production lines.

Other companies, most Japanese-based using low-cost Chinese and South-East Asian assembly lines, are thought likely to follow, though slowly.

This begs the question “How do I record my television shows?” The Answer? Tivo. Want to save the recording long-term? Time to learn how to rip video from your Tivo or a live broadcast to your PC! How?

Start with some free software: Windows Movie Maker 2 makes home movies amazingly fun and easy, letting you create, edit, and share your home movies right on your computer with a few simple drag-and-drop moves. Add special effects, music, and narration. Then share your movie via the Web, e-mail, or CD.

Then get a Belkin USB VideoBus II Video Capture Adapter (or a similar adapter). Hit play on the Tivo or any video source and hit record in the Movie Maker Software. Easy as pie!
