If you are running the new Windows Media Player 9, here are two settings you want to make sure you configure correctly:

Start Windows Media Player. Click Tools –> Options

Uncheck the box marked Allow Internet sites to uniquely identify your Player. That forces WMP to come up with a new i.d. number every time it’s started, so Microsoft can’t track your machine from session to session.

Uncheck the box marked Acquire licenses automatically. You bought the license to your music when you bought the CD. It’s none of Microsoft’s business what you do with it. [Comment on this Post]
